I didn’t want to make this post. But, alas, here I am. There is a saying that’s made its rounds since the first Trump Administration: “Trump Derangement Syndrome”. Initially, this phrase was coined to describe the radical left whackos who would become enraged at the simple mention of Donald Trump’s name; I’m talking the spittle-flecked, bulging neck veins, bug-eyed leftists. You know the type.
But I think it’s safe to say Trump Derangement Syndrome isn’t just limited to leftist “libtards”. MAGA Republicans, AlwaysTrumpers, and, yes, even some Trad Catholics have another form of TDS. This variation is the “Trump-can-do-no-wrong-even-if-it’s-contradictory-and-irrational”. And I’m gonna call it out right here. The cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy simply cannot go unchecked.
What is happening (and has been happening for awhile) should alarm every well-formed and faithful Catholic. The failure to call out this administration’s bloodthirsty support for the genocide in Gaza was reprehensible. I get that it’s easy to detach from foreign affairs….it’s wrong, but easy to do.
However, the situation on the homefront is a different story. What’s unfolding in Minneapolis right now is an incredibly serious situation whose long term consequences not only affect our nation but our souls. No, I do not support illegal immigration. But I also don’t support a militarized police state and massive technological surveillance. Remember, no police state in history has ever ended well for Catholics. This entire situation is being used to advance a technocratic state; Catholics MUST wake up to that.
This is an incredibly complex and nuanced situation; don’t fall for the right v left paradigm. Be faithful to your principles and morals. If something is wrong, it’s always wrong. Our allegiance is to God, not a political party.
